Third Strand Baby Nathan

“11 months ago my life turned upside down, I was diagnosed with a rare type of breast cancer (Malignant phyllodes tumor). After meeting with my oncologist I was told the only type of treatment was to surgically remove the tumor and because of its size a mastectomy was needed, my husband and I both agreed it was the best course of action, we had a beautiful 7 year old daughter who I breastfed for 2 whole years and had already given up on having another child after 3 years of trying.

A month later I had a bilateral mastectomy which was followed by targeted radiation therapy, CT scans for future reconstruction and other things. In the middle of my radiation treatment I went to my OB to make sure I was good to go for my reconstruction since something had come up on a CT scan that was concerning, 2 months later at a sonogram appointment to confirm all was good I received yet another punch.

My sonogram showed nothing however they had a positive pregnancy test from my sample. Roller coaster of emotions, I had prayed for a child and nothing, had given up after my cancer and was focusing on my health and this happens. What am I going to feed this child?!

I had no breasts to produce for a baby, there are formula shortages across the nation.. as the pregnancy progressed I started looking into milk banks and other avenues to be able to provide for my baby. I was referred to the Third Strand Foundation… I filled out an application and waited for a response… 2 weeks before my schedule delivery I received a call from Kyle… I had completely forgotten about my application but the call could not have come at a better time.

This foundation set me up with 10 gallons of breast milk for my newborn, I thank God at every feed for providing in times of need. My pregnancy after cancer gave me hope, and receiving this donation strengthened my faith. My son is 5 days old currently and thriving, went to his newborn check up and baby is eating very well and growing accordingly.

Thank you to this amazing foundation and to the women who are able to produce and donate for us in need.”
